Physical therapy does include exercise. However, it can be seen as the only treatment physical therapy offers. There are many methods physical therapists will use to treat chronic pain, depending on the cause. Listed below are a couple of other methods that our Suffolk County Physical Therapy could perform.

  • Heat and Cold – Typically, heat and cold packs are used to reduce swelling and can help slightly reduce pain temporarily. It often doesn’t assist with chronic pain, but it might help with pains after workouts.
  • Dry needling – One of the less common pain relieving techniques. It involves using thin needles to puncture muscle tissue and knots, which allows the doctor to decrease muscle knots and hit trigger points. This will reduce pain in these spots but is only helpful for specific types of chronic pain.
  • TENS – This stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It involves using a tool called a TENS unit, a small device with electrode pads that can be attached to the skin. The unit will then pulse a small amount of electricity to modify pain signals. This can help relieve long-term pain. It is dangerous to pulse electricity on certain parts of the body, such as the head, so it is used with intention and can not treat all types of pains.
